Wasps, Yellow Jackets, and Hornets: Effective Pest Control Strategies

For optimal results when dealing with wasps, the ideal time to spray is in the early morning or late evening when insect activity is minimal. Maintain a safe distance from the nest and avoid standing directly underneath it. Hold the can upright and point the spray opening towards the nest, with the wind at your back. Continue spraying until the nest is thoroughly saturated, ensuring the complete elimination of the nest population. The residual action of the spray will also kill any returning wasps.

When it comes to yellow jackets, their nests are typically found in the ground, dead tree stumps, railroad ties, walls, or similar structures. During daylight hours, observe them closely to identify the location of the nest entrance. Wait until dusk or early morning when the insects are at rest, then spray for approximately 1-2 seconds or until the surfaces are moist.

Dealing with hornets requires a different approach. Unless you can clearly see the opening at the bottom of the hornets' nest, it is advisable not to use a hornet spray on the nest, as the hornets may escape and attack you. Hornets typically build their nests in trees, shrubs, and under eaves. During daylight hours, locate the nest entrance, and then wait until dusk or early morning when the insects are at rest. Direct the spray into the entrance hole, and as the hornets fall out, continue spraying until no more are visible or the can is empty. Immediately leave the area and avoid spraying on shingles, vinyl siding, trees, shrubs, ornamental plants, or grass, as damage may occur. If the spray does come into contact with these surfaces, rinse them with water immediately.
